A monitoring report on the impact of attacks on Syrian schools by the Southern Turkey Education Cluster (Syria response)

Syria is one of the most heavily affected countries by attacks on education.In Syria, schools arebombed, damaged, looted and destroyed on a regular basis, many places of learning are now deserted as children and teachers flee to safety.Since the conflict began, more than 4,200 schoolshave been damaged, destroyed, militarized or are currently used as shelters by IDPsaccording to data gathered by UNICEF

Attacks on education in Yemen are exacerbating an already devastating crisis for education, said the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) in a briefing paper, Safeguard Yemen’s Future: Protect Education from Attack. According to Yemen’s Education Cluster, 2 million children are out of school today, compared to 1.6 million before the conflict. At the same time, the Cluster reports that 256 schools have been destroyed, and 1,520 damaged during the current armed conflict, which has lasted almost four years. Universities, their staff, and students have also been targeted. Yemeni government authorities in Aden have taken a positive step towards protecting education by endorsing the Safe Schools Declaration and by establishing a Safe Schools Committee within the Ministry of Education. But there is still much more to be done by all parties to the conflict and the international community to ensure that students, education personnel, schools and universities in Yemen remain safe and secure.
