Information & Knowledge Management

Successful humanitarian operations are dependent on the implementation of a strong information and knowledge management system. A strong IM/KM system enables effective coordination and decision making. It facilitates the implementation of good practices and the cessation of adverse practices.

IM/KM tools and approaches need to be appropriate for the operational environment in which a cluster is operating in order for its IM/KM system to be strong and effective. The exact design and scope of a cluster`s IM/KM tools will differ according to the capacity and resources of the cluster and cluster partners as well as on the existing IM capacity and systems available in-country. Generally, governments already have IM capacity and systems in place which must be recognized and adopted. It is essential for a cluster to continually adapt their tools and approaches to ensure their IM/KM system remains strong and effective at each stage of the response.

The guidance, tools, and resources available on this page are designed to support the development and implementation of effective IM tools and systems by either Information Management Officers and or Cluster Coordinators.
